NOC Junior Engineer (C2) Position #:
127038 The University of Maryland's Network Operations Center unit (NOC) is responsible for monitoring,managing and ensuring high availability of the University's wired and wireless network in a 24 7 365 environment.
NOC triages incoming incidents from the service desk via the ServiceNow ticketing system, messaging systems (email, Webex), phones and tools, and resolves the issue or escalates them to the appropriate groups.
This NOC Junior Engineer position fulfills network resource and service requests, supports the campus community with network related issues, and provides on-site customer support.
This position requires an understanding of network security and may require the development and deployment of network security services.
Documentation is a critical component of this position.
Operations, duty and audit reports and documentation are essential.
This position requires the mentoring of the Network Operations Students group within the Division of Information Technology.
This involves training, shadowing, guiding, and review of work tasks.
The engineer may need to spend time assisting with the duties of student staff that are being mentored to ensure work tasks are being performed properly.
This position may require on-call weekend or overnight hours for problem resolution or maintenance in support of the University's main campus and satellite offices.
Minimum
Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's degree with preferred emphasis in Computer Science, Information Systems, Math or a related field.
Experience:
CERTIFICATIONS Network certification (CCNA, Network+, etc.
) EXPERIENCE At least 2 years of network operations or IT service desk experience working in an enterprise environment including routers, access switches, firewalls, VPNs, wireless access points, wireless encryption protocols (WPA2), and using wireless protocol analyzers and other wireless troubleshooting tools Experience using enterprise Network Management Systems applications (Broadcom Spectrum, HP Openview, Cisco Prime, SolarWinds, etc.
) Experience with network services tools (Infoblox, BlueCat, etc.
).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES Valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle OTHERS:
Well-developed organizational skills and keen attention to detail Ability to work in a team environment, as well as independently Preferences CERTIFICATIONS:
CCNA and/or other network certifications
Experience:
One year of Network Operations Center (NOC) experience KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Physical demands:
Ability to travel to a remote location for support or implementation of services.
Ability to walk to campus buildings needing service Ability to lift moderately heavy objects such as network switches.
Ability to install networking equipment that includes climbing ladders, lifting network equipment, working with hand tools, and accessing mechanical rooms.
Ability to be on-call, and provide off-hour support which may include traveling to the University or other campus locations Sitting for long periods of time.
Willingness to work different shifts in a 24 hour period.
