Senior Network Engineer Position #:
106469 The University of Maryland's Network Operations unit is responsible for monitoring and managing the University's network in a 24 7 365 environment.
This position is responsible for maintaining all network devices, including both the wired and wireless networks.
Maintenance includes resolving hardware issues, upgrading code as necessary, diagnosing and resolving network performance issues.
This position also provides senior technical consultation and guidance for Network Operations, the Division of Information Technology, and the University.
In addition, this position will be the lead operational engineer focusing on network operations optimization.
This position may also involve planning, designing, and implementing network infrastructure projects.
The engineer should be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Project management skills are desirable.
This engineer may be expected to be the project manager/lead on a portion of the department's projects.
This includes meeting with the stakeholders, gathering requirements, pulling in resources within the team and outside in order to coordinate their efforts, create and present designs, oversee the implementation of the project.
Documentation is a critical component of this position.
Design documents will contain diagrams, purpose statements, stakeholder requirements, test plans, required personnel and hardware resources, costs estimates and schedules.
Other duties include managing network resources such as installed fiber, network infrastructure, and assisting with the management of the network services infrastructure and other support systems.
This position requires an understanding of network security and may require the development and deployment of network security services.
This position requires the mentoring of junior personnel within the Division of Information Technology.
This involves training, shadowing, guiding, and review of work tasks.
It may also involve the engineer's time to assist with the duties of junior staff that are being mentored to ensure the work tasks are being performed properly.
The position may require off hours response to network outages and service interruptions.
In addition, there may be a need to work a different shift (work hours).
After hours on call participation may be needed at times.
Minimum
Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's degree with preferred emphasis in Computer Science, Information Systems, Math or a related field.
Experience:
At least seven years of progressive network design and support experience with at least five years specific to the support and design of enterprise networks including routers, access switches, firewalls, intrusion prevention vpns, access points, wireless encryption protocols (in particular WPA2), and using wireless protocol analyzers and other wireless troubleshooting tools.
Experience with using enterprise NMS applications (CA Spectrum, HP Openview, Cisco Prime, Solar Winds, etc.
).
Experience with network services infrastructure (Infoblox, BlueCat, etc.
).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to maintain network infrastructure and services, including switches, routers, firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, packet shapers, and other network infrastructure devices.
Extensive knowledge of DHCP and DNS, authentication protocols (RADIUS, TACACS, Kerberos, etc.
), routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, etc.
), QoS, Multicast, VPNs, network security principles, network protocol analyzers, and a full understanding of the OSI model.
Advanced knowledge of the following technical areas:
routing, switching, wireless, multicast, QoS, network management principles, firewalls, VPNs, network security principles, network capacity planning and management.
Technical knowledge of and experience working with current hardware including:
o Cisco and Aruba routers and switches.
o Cisco and Aruba Wireless WLC and APs.
o Cisco firewalls and VPNs, o Palo Alto firewalls and IPS.
Technical knowledge of network systems, protocols, and standards such as:
GigabitEthernet, Power over Ethernet, LAN, WAN, TCP/IP, 802.
1x, SIP, H.
323, PIM, OSPF, and BGP.
Able to:
o Identify problems in the enterprise network infrastructure and propose solutions.
o Identify functions that can be improved by process development and implementation.
o Meet with customers and obtain specific requirements.
o Work independently, as well as within a team environment.
o Prepare purchase requisitions, and SOWs with executive summaries and backup documentation.
Preferences A Master's degree in a related field is preferred but not required.
